The Benefits of Chair Massage for Oncology Nursing Professionals

Introduction

Chair massage has gained recognition as an effective non-pharmacological intervention for reducing stress and pain, particularly in high-stress environments such as oncology nursing. This blog post aims to educate our clients about the significant benefits of chair massage, supported by recent research findings, and its potential applications in their lives.

Background

Oncology nursing professionals often face high levels of chronic stress and musculoskeletal disorders due to the demanding nature of their work. This stress not only impacts their well-being but also the quality of care provided to patients. Research conducted in São Paulo, Brazil, evaluated the effectiveness of chair massage in reducing chronic stress and musculoskeletal pain among oncology nurses (Souza et al., 2021).

Study Design and Methods

The study was a randomized controlled trial involving 60 female oncology nursing professionals. Participants were divided into two groups: one received chair massage sessions, and the other served as a control group with no intervention. The massage group underwent two 15-minute chair massage sessions per week for three weeks. Stress levels and pain were measured using the List of Signs and Symptoms (LSS) and the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI).

Results

The study found significant reductions in stress and pain among the participants who received chair massages. The LSS scores indicated a marked decrease in stress levels, with a Cohen’s d value of 1.21, suggesting a large effect size. The BPI results showed significant improvements in pain interference in general activity, mood, work, and sleep, with a notable decrease in pain levels in the back, lumbar, and cervical regions (Souza et al., 2021).

Discussion

The findings highlight the benefits of chair massage in managing stress and musculoskeletal pain among oncology nursing professionals. The study supports the use of chair massage as an integrative practice to enhance occupational health and improve the quality of life for healthcare workers. The protocol used in the study can be easily adapted to other high-stress work environments, providing a practical solution for stress and pain management.
